We officially got our first home together guys! In the last year I have made new friends, been managing academic responsibilities, work and exploring some incredible places. I've been in West Virginia, with its stunning mountains and vibrant culture, it has been a fantastic setting for the past year, and I plan to spend at least a few months here for the foreseeable future.

Embracing the New Roommate Experience

Welcoming a new roommate can change your life in exciting ways. Not only do you get a chance to develop a friendship, but you also learn to share spaces and responsibilities. It's crucial to communicate openly about expectations from the beginning.

Set aside some time to discuss critical topics like house rules, shared expenses, and personal boundaries. For instance, agree on a chore list that works for everyone, or take turns sharing all of them.

To strengthen your relationship, plan enjoyable activities together. Consider these options:

  • Local Attractions: Visit places like the Greenbrier River Trail or take a stroll through the historic streets of Lewisburg.

  • Movie Nights: Host a movie marathon featuring your favorite genres or series to connect and have fun.

  • Gaming Nights: We all luckily love to game so this has been a no brainer for us personally.

Diving into My New Degree Path

Starting a new degree can feel like a roller coaster ride filled with opportunities for growth. Whether you choose environmental science, education, or the arts, your surroundings in West Virginia can enhance your educational journey. I'm studying Coding for now, and the best advice i can give it make sure to find some time for yourselves.! Burn out is real, don't let yourself forget all the things you love. Give yourself time to relax and the freedom to unwind from time to time.

Time management is key. Consider these strategies:

  • Create a Schedule: Break your day into blocks for classes, studying, and leisure. A well-planned week can boost your productivity.

  • Prioritize Daily Tasks: Identify your most important assignments at the start of each week, even if it’s as simple as using a planner or a digital calendar. This has always helped me keep on track. If you knock out the things you really dread first the rest doesn't seem so daunting.

Planning for Travel Adventures

Staying in West Virginia means opportunities to explore, especially with its breathtaking natural beauty and we plan to see all there is to see in this beautiful state. From the beautiful Appalachian Mountains to scenic rivers and charming small towns, there is no shortage of spots to visit. (Keep an eye on my snapchat guys!)

Create a travel bucket list that motivates you to explore. Some of my must-see destinations include:

  • New River Gorge: Renowned for its outdoor recreation, including rock climbing and white-water rafting.

  • Harpers Ferry: A historic town rich in civil war history, also known for its great hiking trails.

  • Blackwater Falls State Park: Famous for its picturesque waterfalls and hiking trails, perfect for a weekend getaway.

To simplify your travel plans, consider weekend trips. Short excursions can give you a break from studying while allowing you to experience new places. Traveling together with your roommate could also foster a deeper friendship, as you share memorable experiences.

Finding Balance

Make time for self-care. Whether it’s through exercise, reading, or spending a quiet evening at home, taking care of yourself ensures that you remain energized and focused and guys ALWAYS prioritize your mental health.

Consider joining clubs or organizations connected to your interests. These can provide help you meet people with similar passions and make lasting friendships. For example, join a hiking club or bring some friends to explore the stunning Appalachian trails or a book club to engage in discussions and enjoy reading. The libraries in west Virginia are slept on for sure, I love them

Embracing New Beginnings

Stepping into this new chapter in West Virginia for me this last year turned out to involve a new roommate, a fresh degree, and exciting travel plans. I'm thankful for where i am and here is hoping the road ahead is filled with laughter, learning, and countless adventures. Here’s to new beginnings and memorable experiences that hopefully await!
